Splendor

When I think of “Splendor” in the context of Advent, the first thing that comes to mind is the angels announcing Christ’s birth to the shepherds. But on reflection, “Splendor” started happening way before that:

In the beginning God created everything that is or ever will be, in all its splendor:  the planets, stars, universes - even the black holes. Not to mention the people, plants, animals, fish, birds, … and all the submicroscopic elements that we all share.

When Moses spoke with God on the mountain and in the Temple of Meeting, when Jesus was transfigured, when the women met the two angels in Jesus’ tomb – even today whenever humans encounter God “in person” – all describe the presence of the LORD in a dazzling white, shining, breathtakingly awesome form.

And words of splendor are in the Psalms, in our most beloved hymns and songs, and in the Book of Common Prayer:

“On the glorious splendor of your majesty, and on your wondrous works, I will meditate.”   Ps 145:5

“Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty…”  Hymn 362

“I see trees of green, red roses too…. I hear babies cry and watch them grow…. And I think to myself, ‘What a wonderful world.’”

“Splendor and honor and kingly power are yours by right, O LORD our God. “  (BCP p. 93)

“And so to him who sits upon the throne, and to Christ the Lamb, be worship and praise, dominion and splendor, forever and for evermore.”  Rev. 4:13 (BCP p. 93)
